FEATURED KEYNOTE PRESENTATION
The 3rd Patient Engagement Summit: New Technologies for Engaging Patients in Clinical Trials, March 19-21, in Philadelphia, features a keynote presentation: How Do Patients View Pharma Companies’ Efforts to Use Social Media to Involve them in Clinical Trials? From Jenni Prokopy, Founder/Editrix of ChronicBabe.com

Here are some thoughts from Jenni:

In a few weeks, I’ll have the pleasure of speaking at the 3rd Patient Engagement Summit, where the focus will be on using digital tools to get patients interested in participating in trials and research.

This is a topic I’ve thought about a good bit, and discussed with many colleagues. It’s rife with disagreement; just read this article from The Journal of Participatory Medicine on the risks and rewards, and you’ll see why folks are confused about where to start.

On the one hand, you have sites that have gathered bazillions of patients to share their experiences in the hopes of furthering science (and finding a little relief for themselves). The community is awesome, but some critics don’t like that it’s backed (in part) by pharma. But 136,000 patients can’t be wrong—something of value is happening at the site, no doubt.

On the other hand, you have tiny communities like our Forum, where about 1,400 women gather and discuss their issues. Have I allowed people to talk about trials for which they need to recruit members? No—because I’ve had no effective way to screen them. But should I consider doing it? Yes—I think it’s time. There are patients who need care and can benefit from participating, while helping others in the long run, too.

And finally, you have pharma companies who are sloppy about diving into online communities and trying to recruit. Who hasn’t gotten an email or an invitation in a forum from a company that’s looking for folks to test their goods on? The tough thing about this is that some research is totally legit—but their tactics turn us off. They clearly haven’t read this advice from The Mayo Clinic about interacting online.

This is an exciting time for recruiting patients into clinical trials and engaging them throughout!

As more pharmaceutical companies crack the code about how to successfully use new technologies to meet deadlines, Clinical Trials Leaders must maintain a keen awareness of what tools are available, or risk falling behind competitors who more quickly recruit patients and more effectively engage them while avoiding attrition.

At ExL’s 3rd Patient Engagement Summit: New Technologies for Engaging Patients in Clinical Trials, trial leaders will gain the knowledge they need to choose between very different technologies when trying to meet deadlines.

  2. Learning from forward thinking clinical trial leaders, you will become familiar with how new technologies improve every process from study design to site level interactions, and even post-study follow up.
  3. Understand how leading pharmaceutical companies have successfully integrated these tools into their clinical processes, achieved buy in from their team, and seamlessly improved their process.
  4. Network with top clinical trial leaders who make decisions about how to increase and improve patient recruitment, compliance, and followup.
